| Description: |
The spring gun (a.k.a. "boing gun" or "boinger") is a handmade weapon constructed with a salvaged high-tension industrial or automotive spring. The spring is compressed and held in place with a mechanical catch. Pulling the trigger releases the catch, and the force of the spring uncoiling launches a projectile. The spring must be compressed after each shot, either manually or with a crank mechanism; spring guns take about as long to reload as a crossbow. Models built to fire bolts or darts will resemble a crossbow without the bow, with the stock slotted so the projectile flies straight when fired. Models that fire blunt metal or stone projectiles usually have a hollow tube similar to a gun barrel for the same purpose. Spring guns are relatively simple and cheap to build, consisting of a spring, a stock, and a trigger mechanism, and are lighter and easier to conceal than a crossbow, though less accurate at long range. |
